For some, the thought of losing the security blanket of winter boots and enclosed shoes can be terrifying … no matter what glorious array of sandals are out there to tempt you.

However, a little daily TLC will have you baring your feet in no time. Here’s how:

1 Soak feet for 10-15 minutes in warm water. Make sure it’s not too hot as this will dehydrate the skin.

2 Use a pumice stone or pedi paddle (professional term for sand paper on a stick) on callouses. Wet the device first then gently abrade the rough skin. Little and often is key otherwise the area can become tender.

3 Next, thoroughly dry the feet and massage in a specialised foot cream. Look out for products containing shea butter and salicylic acid.

4 Leave any remaining product on and wear cotton socks to bed to allow moisturiser to absorb overnight.

If you feel an electric sander is required to attend to your cracked heels I suggest seeking professional attention in the form of a pedicure.

The perfect pedicure incorporates work on the nails, cuticles (the area of skin directly below the base of the nail) and skin.

Generally nails are clipped for length and then shaped with a file. For healthy nails keep them straight across the top. Any rounding of the corners will encourage the nail to grow outwards resulting in a painful ingrown nail.

To loosen the cuticle from the nail plate it should be soaked in water before being softened with cuticle cream. Cuticle remover will then be applied as various tools (check they are sterile) are used to lift the skin away and ease the cuticle back. This should not hurt! If the pressure is uncomfortable or there is any bleeding the therapist should ease up.

Thickened skin should be buffed away gently with a pedi paddle and/or exfoliating product.

Your feet, and often lower legs, should then be soothed with relaxing massage. A cooling mask may be applied. Finish with a dash of coloured nail polish.

To ensure you keep your feet in tip top condition:

– Check you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Cracked heels can be a sign of omega-3 deficiency. In order to completely heal your dry cracked skin you need to address the cause as well as the symptoms. Omega-3 can be found in fish and flaxseed oil.

– Check for conditions such as athletes foot (fungal infection causing white itchy flaking skin in between the toes) and verucca (plantar warts resembling a tiny cauliflower with a black dot in the centre). Both are highly contagious and require a visit to the pharmacist. Wear sandals in public showers to prevent cross contamination.

– Wear different shoes each day. This does not necessarily mean 365 pairs – although it is the perfect excuse! Just alternate your shoes to allow them to dry out.

There are many cases of people going through school being labeled slow, naughty or inattentive, only to be diagnosed with dyslexia in later years. Dyslexia is a type of thinking and learning style independent of intellectual abilities. People with dyslexia do not respond to the conventional methods of learning to read; instead they have a visual learning style. There is no cure for dyslexia as it is not a disease, however dyslexics can overcome their reading challenges when given the correct reading method.

Dyslexia isn’t a symptom of low intelligence – in fact, several highly intelligent and creative people have worn the dyslexia label, including Leonardo da Vinci, Orlando Bloom, Erin Brockovich, Pablo Picasso, Richard Branson, Albert Einstein, Agatha Christie, and Thomas Edison. Dyslexic people are usually creative and excel at three-dimensional problem solving and hands-on learning.

According to the Dyslexia Association, identifying dyslexia can be tricky, and they believe there isn’t one accurate measuring tool to confirm the condition. The most common characteristic of dyslexia is people have difficulty reading and spelling. Estimates vary, but up to five per cent of the population are thought to have dyslexia, with dyslexia being two to three times more prevalent in males compared with females.

Neuroscientists at Georgetown University Medical Center in the US have recently published their research online in the journal Brain Structure and Function, showing that there are significant differences in brain anatomy when comparing men and women with dyslexia. Their study is also the first to directly compare the brain anatomy of females with and without dyslexia in both children and adults.

Because dyslexia is more prevalent in males, “females have been overlooked,” says senior author Guinevere Eden, PhD, director for the Centre for the Study of Learning and past-president of the International Dyslexia Association.

“It has been assumed that results of studies conducted in men are generalisable to both sexes. But our research suggests that researchers need to tackle dyslexia in each sex separately to address questions about its origin and potentially, treatment,” Eden says.

“There is sex-specific variance in brain anatomy and females tend to use both hemispheres for language tasks, while males just the left,” Evans says. “It is also known that sex hormones are related to brain anatomy and that female sex hormones such as oestrogen can be protective after brain injury, suggesting another avenue that might lead to the sex-specific findings reported in this study.”

Sickness was inevitable. At work people were coughing and spluttering, and at home my sons were battling gastro. It seemed an impossible feat to shield myself from the germs floating around, particularly as I catch a crowded train to work that often sounds like a doctor’s waiting room. I had planned to give my immune system a boost but stupidly, I was too busy for that. Regretfully, I paid the price of the double whammy: flu and gastro. I plan on never doing that again, ever.  From this day forward I promise to look after my immune system by following the three golden keys.

1. A strong immune system: Nutrition

According Stephen Eddey, director of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ATMS] the most powerful nutritional supplements to boost immunity are zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, a high-quality multivitamin, plus the herbs astragalus and Echinacea. “However, it’s important to understand that Echinacea should be taken only when you are sick, not as a preventative measure,” Eddey points out. “Astragalus is used as a preventive – but if you get sick you must stop taking this herb.” Of course, these nutrients must be supplemental to a healthy diet loaded with vegetables and fruit.

2. A strong immune system: Hygiene

Eddey also stresses that basic hygiene protocols such as hand washing also need to be followed to ensure a strong immune system. The flu virus can survive on hard surfaces for up to 48 hours and can spread through hand contact. In a study by Harvard University, in homes with hand sanitisers, the risk of catching a gastrointestinal illness from a sick child dropped 60 percent compared with the control families. Washing hands with soap and water for 15-20 seconds is the best way to reduce the number of germs on them. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, but sanitisers do not eliminate all types of germs.

3. A strong immune system: Sleep

Science backs up the old wives’ tale that lack of sleep makes you more prone to getting sick. Research from the University of Texas shows that our T-cells go down if we are sleep deprived and our inflammatory cytokines go up, which both lead to suppressed immune system function.  Good sleep habits involve having a restful sleeping environment, having a regular bedtime and getting enough sleep so you wake up feeling refreshed.

Meghan Markle has revealed her first overseas trip as a member of the Royal Family will be to Sydney for the Invictus Games.

The couple, who get married in five weeks on May 19, were in Bath, UK to watch the British athletes training.

Britain’s Prince Harry, Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, and Meghan Markle meet athletes at the team trials for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 at the University of Bath Sports Training Village in Bath, Britain, April 6, 2018.

During their visit, Prince Harry and Meghan spoke with veteran, Michael Mellon, who suffered from a rugby injury while playing for the Royal Air Force in 2005 which resulted in the amputation of his lower left leg.

The father of three children spoke with Markle, sharing how important the Invictus Games are and how last year’s event had really made a difference to his life. ‘I played both rugby and squash competitively and had been really fit. After I injured myself I told everyone I would be back on the pitch in six weeks – and ended up having my leg amputated.’said Mellon.

As Mellon said how excited he was for this year’s event Markle agreed – ‘She told me that she had never been to Australia but was going to this year’s event and was really looking forward to being there with Harry. ‘

The Royal visit was a real morale boost for the athletes who have a huge respect for Prince Harry and what paper writing he is achieving with the Invictus Games.

The Invictus Games will be held in Sydney from October 20-27

Those who have a university degree are most likely to sleep on their left sides, while those who take to the bed on the opposite side each night are probably smokers.

According to a UK bed manufacturer poll of 5000 sleepers, the position you sleep in reveals plenty about your age, job, hobbies and how rested you will be.

Heavy drinkers are regarded as ‘stomach slumpers’, while those who drift off lying on their front and those who adopt the star fish position spread out on their back wake up feeling the most refreshed.

Laying on the left or right side promotes a clear, unobstructed airway and helps the body reach a deep REM sleep, repairing the body overnight https://masterra.com/dissertation-writing-service.html.

Despite a healthy appetite, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson has revealed her recent weight loss is down to stretching and yoga. Lawson says dropping three dress sizes is a result of doing yoga three times a week. “I have to do something I enjoy, otherwise I wouldn’t do it” she tells Good Housekeeping magazine.

“Life is complicated, and cooking doesn’t have to be.” The 57-year-old foodie added that: “the older I get the more I realise I have got to do lots of stretching. So even if I’m not doing yoga, I make myself do lots of stretching.”

Happy glamper https://www.mindfood.com/weekend-glamping/ https://www.mindfood.com/weekend-glamping/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 14:00:00 +0000 http://www.mindfood.com/?article=weekend-glamping Is there a way to redefine roughing it – to head to the wild in style?

The post Happy glamper appeared first on MiNDFOOD.

Most of us really enjoy the concept of camping – sleeping under the stars, becoming one with nature, toasting marshmallows over the campfire – but it’s the practicalities that discourage the masses from pitching their tents.  But what if there was a way to redefine roughing it – to head to the wild in style?

Glamping or glamour camping has long been popular in Africa (cast your mind back to the safari camp depicted in Out of Africa staring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford). But it’s only in the past two decade that boutique accommodation operators in New Zealand and Australia have started to embrace the concept of luxury camping.

One such retreat is the Paperbark Camp, located a little over two hours south of Sydney near Jervis Bay. Concealed within 100 acres of dense scrub, Paperbark Camp offers visitors the ultimate back-to-nature-retreat with opulent tents adorned with all the normal hotel luxuries.

Irena and Jeremy Hutchings opened Paperbark Camp over fifteen years ago and were determined to make the most of the spectacular bush environment.  They’ve also made an effort to embrace fresh, local produce, which is used at The Gunyah Restaurant. The Paperbark camp provides a great excuse for a quick break from Sydney.

Visit paperbarkcamp.com.au for more information.

If a NSW luxury getaway is not feasible, then here are our picks for clamping around New Zealand and Australia. But be warned – if you’re at all budget-conscious than we suggest you stick to the old tent, foam mat and gas cooker option.

Wildlife lovers: Bamurru Plains, Kakadu National Park, Australia

Outback experience: Wilpena Pound Resort, South Australia

Riverside retreat: Nightfall Camp, Lamington National Park, Australia

Island getaway: Fossil Bay Lodge, Waiheke Island, New Zealand

Forest adventure: Highland Forest Retreat, Kauri Coast, New Zealand

Now in its third year, Australia’s most tropical and unique wine festival, Wine Island, returns to Clark Island, Sydney Harbour from Friday 10 November – Sunday 12 November, 2017.

Throw away your cares and come discover a piece of paradise filled with good wine, food, music, silent discos, masterclasses, treasure hunts and more! This exquisite yet relatively untouched piece of paradise is a small island so only a limited number of ‘holiday-makers’ can attend the event – giving Wine Island its famed first- class feels.

All guests will be welcomed aboard the Wine Island ‘Bubbles Boats’ with a glass of sparkling in hand for the short journey to paradise. Once on land, you can kick back and enjoy the island soundtrack over a glass of pinot gris, chat to the friendly winemakers, or simply lie back and soak in the view. This is a totally unique experience best enjoyed with friends and family.

For more information, head to Wine Island’s official website here.

The Private Kitchen in Chippendale’s burgeoning Kensington Street precinct has secured the ultimate coup by way of two Michelin-starred chefs for the launch of a series of dining events, the Four Hands International Chef Collaboration.

The ‘Four Hands’ experience pairs Kensington Street’s resident chefs with a succession of acclaimed visiting chefs including Chef Han Liguang who was last week awarded his first Michelin star for his restaurant Labryinth in Singapore and Chef Seita Nakahara from the celebrated terra, also in Singapore.

Owned by Greencliff, The Private Kitchen was always destined as a platform to promote international chefs to Sydney diners. Located on the third floor of The Old Rum Store, a distinguished heritage building that recently roared to life with the addition of Olio Kensington Street and Eastside Grill, The Private Kitchen has until now, been reserved for private events. The ‘Four Hands’ series will therefore provide an unique opportunity to dine in one of Kensington Street’s hidden gems.

Greencliff Executive Chairman Dr. Stanley Quek said, “Kensington Street is already the second home to a number of international chefs including Stanley Wong from Eastside Grill, Lino Sauro at Olio Kensington Street and Frederic Colin from Bistrot Gavroche, whom each have established restaurants and culinary businesses outside of Australia.

“The Private Kitchen was designed to be a space that would shine a light on visiting chefs, whether from overseas or interstate. It’s a fantastic opportunity for chefs to get an insight into the Sydney dining market and for guests to have a dining experience they would otherwise have to travel to enjoy.”

The first event will be held next week with only a few tickets remaining:

Wednesday 12 July, 6pm
Location: The Private Kitchen, Level 3, The Old Rum Store, Kensington Street, Chippendale Price: $120pp dinner only / $175pp with paired wines

Friday 11 August
Old Rum Store, Kensington Street, Chippendale

Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery is delighted to announce the exhibition Relative Reciprocity, featuring work by two highly acclaimed artists Lonnie Hutchinson and Reuben Paterson.

Hutchinson (Ngai Tahu, Samoan) and Paterson (Ngai Tuhoe, Ngati Rangitihi, Scottish) are two artists who have firmly embedded Maori and Polynesian world-views and visual languages into their practices, which in Relative Reciprocity explore the recurring aesthetic, political and spiritual use of light and darkness.

Both artists are aware of the breadth of meanings connected to black, from its significance in mythology to its use in both protest movements and pop culture and the niggling relationship between blackness and race. Light too has its own range of qualities. It’s the interplay between light and dark – and the continuum that exists between – that the exhibition most fully embraces, from the suspended spark of a firework to the glimpses of light that exist between form.

This exhibition runs at Te Uru from 24 June – 2 August to coincide with Matariki celebrations across the country.

Design enthusiasts are being urged to mark their calendars for the 2017 Auckland Garden DesignFest being held on 25 and 26 November.

Organised jointly by the Garden Design Society of New Zealand and Rotary Newmarket, tickets for the fourth biennial Auckland Garden DesignFest will be available to purchase from 01 July.

The two-day charity event provides a rare opportunity to view the work of some of the country’s top designers. With only one exception, these professionally designed, private gardens have not previously been opened for public viewing.

Proceeds from the DesignFest will once again benefit Ronald McDonald House, Garden to Table and Rotary Club of Newmarket Charitable Trust.

Gardens included in the event are selected by a panel of experts from the Garden Design Society of New Zealand. Each of the designers will be on-site, allowing visitors to hear first-hand what has inspired them at each garden.

The full list of designers will be unveiled on 01 September, but organisers have confirmed that popular designers Trish Bartleet, Richard Neville, Trudy Crerar, Sue and Colin McLean, Barbara Garrett and Damian Wendelborn have already made the cut.

Auckland Garden DesignFest, Joint Chairperson, Rose Thodey says; “We are thrilled to be able to once again provide a diverse range of up to 20 gardens for the 2017 Auckland Garden DesignFest. Designed by a number of talented designers, these gardens will really showcase the value of good design talent.

“Not only will visitors be able to visit and explore a number of private, professionally designed gardens that are not usually open to the public, but they will be able to talk with, and gain inspiration from the designers themselves.  This is what makes our DesignFest truly unique.”

Optional, expert guided bus tours will once again be available. These are expected to sell out quickly so visitors are encouraged to book in early.

Tickets for the Auckland Garden DesignFest will be available from 01 July at iTICKET, plus various garden retailers and onsite at the garden gate. Visitors can choose from $65 all garden tickets, $10 single garden access or three gardens for $20. See website for early bird ticket offers.

The 20th Sydney Writers’ Festival runs May 22 to May 28. Tied together by the theme of “refuge”, it offers 400 events with over 450 writers across greater Sydney. Free events make up approximately 40% of the program.

Artistic Director Michaela McGuire said at the launch of the program, “Across the 2017 Festival, some of the world’s most curious and compassionate, irreverent but respectful, intelligent and argumentative writers will be offering up their brilliant works as temporary respite, and interrogating the forces that compel us to come together and find sanctuary.”

More than 400 Australian authors from across the country are featured. They appear alongside some key international acts such as feminist writer Roxane Gay, George Saunders, Pulitzer prize-winning journalists and authors, Susan Faludi and Thomas Friedman, along with many others.

Families are invited to participate in the festival, with the whole of Walsh Bay’s Pier 4/5 being converted into a children’s book wonderland on May 28.
